Common Cockroach Identification

Cockroaches are common throughout New Zealand, but not every cockroach means you have a serious infestation. Some species are indoor pests that breed quickly around food, warmth, and moisture. Others are outdoor cockroaches that may only wander inside from gardens, bark, firewood, or exterior gaps.

Knowing what type of cockroach you are dealing with can help you understand whether it is likely to be a one-off visitor or something that needs proper treatment.

German Cockroach

Size: German cockroaches are small, usually around 10–15 mm long.

Looks: They are light brown to tan in colour and have two dark stripes behind the head. They are fast-moving and often hide before you get a proper look at them.

Places Found: German cockroaches are usually found indoors, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, cupboards, appliances, dishwashers, fridge motors, and food preparation areas.

German cockroaches are one of the most successful indoor pest cockroaches in the world. Despite the name, they are not only a German pest. They have spread worldwide by living closely with people and travelling through goods, buildings, and food-related environments.

German cockroaches are one of the main cockroach species to worry about inside a home or business because they can breed quickly and hide in very small spaces.

American Cockroach

Size: American cockroaches are much larger, usually around 30–40 mm long.

Looks: They are reddish brown with a lighter yellowish marking behind the head. They have long antennae, a broad body, and can look quite intimidating because of their size.

Places Found: American cockroaches prefer warm, damp, dark areas. They are often found around drains, basements, subfloors, bathrooms, laundries, commercial buildings, rubbish areas, and food storage areas.

American cockroaches are now found in many parts of the world. They are strongly associated with human buildings, shipping, drains, and warm urban environments. In New Zealand, they are more likely to be found in heated buildings or damp sheltered areas.

Regular sightings inside should be taken seriously, especially if they are being found near food areas, drains, or moisture problems.

Gisborne Cockroach

Size: Gisborne cockroaches are usually around 20–30 mm long, although some can be larger.

Looks: They are dark brown to black and often have pale cream markings along the sides of the body. They are wingless and do not fly.

Places Found: Gisborne cockroaches are mainly outdoor cockroaches. They are commonly found in gardens, bark, mulch, woodpiles, leaf litter, retaining walls, exterior cladding gaps, and around fences or exterior walls.

The Gisborne cockroach originally came from Australia. It was first recorded in New Zealand around Gisborne in the 1960s, which is how it got its name. It has since spread through parts of the country.

These cockroaches may come inside during wet weather, hot weather, or when conditions outside change. Finding one inside does not always mean you have an indoor infestation.

Native Bush Cockroaches

Size: Native bush cockroaches vary in size, but many are small to medium-sized.

Looks: They are usually brown, dark brown, or black. Some are wingless and have a flatter, broader body than the common indoor pest cockroaches.

Places Found: Native cockroaches are normally found outdoors in bush, gardens, logs, leaf litter, damp soil, and natural areas. They may occasionally enter homes by accident through doors, windows, firewood, or gaps around the exterior.

Native cockroaches are part of New Zealand’s natural environment. They help break down organic material and are not usually considered a household pest.

If you only see one every now and then, it may have simply wandered inside. However, if you are seeing large numbers around the home, there may be harbourage areas close to the building.

How Guardian Pest Control Can Help

If you are unsure what type of cockroach you have, Guardian Pest Control can inspect the property and identify where the activity is coming from.

For indoor pest species like German and American cockroaches, we use targeted treatments such as baiting, residual spraying, dusting, and monitoring to help control the infestation properly. For outdoor species like Gisborne or native cockroaches, we can focus on exterior harbourage areas, entry points, moisture, and garden conditions to reduce activity around the home.

If cockroaches are showing up regularly, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, cupboards, appliances, or food areas, it is best to deal with the problem early before numbers build.
