Do Borer Bombs Work?
There’s a lot said about whether borer bombs work or not especially on the internet, some say they’re as effective as fly spray others say using one is more effective and cheaper than getting a professional in.
From our experience from hundreds of different borer treatments, inspections and surveys we don't believe they work not even close to what they say they’re capable of. Below are some logical notes backing this up first we'll explain the rough mechanics/workings of the borer bombs.
A borer bomb is essentially a pressurised canister of residual insecticide when released goes airborne all throughout the room/void you're releasing it in, after a few hours all the pressurised insecticide is released from the can into the air and eventually lands onto the exposed surfaces in that area. Once landed on that area the timber absorbs a certain percentage of what’s laying on the surface and the rest dries up on the surface. This is the boiled down works of a borer bomb. (specs, times and active ingredients vary depending on brand and product type)
And here are some of the main flaws.
A borer bomb is mainly targeting the eggs and or beetles on the exposed side of the timber not the entrance of the timber which the bomb won’t get to
A very minimal amount of product is being applied/absorbed by the timber. For an effective treatment you want to soak the timber.
Not all surfaces are being treated. The spray from the borer bomb only gets to the timbers exposed, if there’s insulation covering timbers, water tanks in front of timbers etc these timbers will not be getting treated.
Not all houses are air tight, possibly causing the airborne insecticide to be pushed to one side of the house from wind drafts or even be sucked out of the room from a small vacuum effect.
There a countless more reasons to why the borer bombs are nowhere near as effective as a spray applied treatment. Some could argue that it’s a lot easier, safer, no risk for damage and safer. Cheaper it is but safer and no risk of damage is false. Most pest control companies that take pride in their work alongside ourselves guardian pest control have the tools, equipment and expertise to complete an effective treatment with no damage to the property or the pets and people staying in it.
